CLARA KASAVINA RE-IMAGINES COMPANY’S VINTAGE JEWELRY LINE

NEW YORK, New York (03/2012)  Designer Clara Kasavina of red-carpet-style evening bags fame has re-imagined a line of her company’s jewelry, first issued in the ’80’s.  The line that was popular then is even more popular now, as the pieces have been tweaked for the new century to be young, stunning and affordable while maintaining the same artisanship Clara Kasavina is known for.

The Clara Kasavina Jewelry Collection consists of rings, pendants, earrings, bracelets and necklaces, all of which have a fresh, glamorous look, like the Marquis  earrings shown above.  These earrings are distinguished by the point-to-point marquise-shaped blue Swarovski crystal centers surrounded by diamonté. The pair depicted here is for pierced ears but can be ordered as clip-ons.

The popularity of Clara Kasavina’s, hand-made-in-New-York jewelry is evident in the number of line-for-line copies that have been popping up in the editorial pages of Marie Claire, for instance, as well as in a number of ads placed in fashion and accessories magazines.

The Clara Kasavina Jewelry Collections was originally created in the early ‘80’s by Clara’s husband Misha Berger. Berger, a sculptor who emigrated from the Ukraine in the ‘70’s, is experienced in the art of chikanka, or metal chasing. His work is so fine, it was recognized by museums in the Ukraine, before he came to America and began a collaboration with his wife in their fashion accessories business. Colors and shapes of the re-issued line have been modified to be up-to-the-fashion minute.

Of the flurry of imitations of his and Clara’s designs, Berger says, “I don’t believe this is the sincerest form of flattery. I think it’s more like flummery.” Among the pieces which have been copied are the Infinity Cuff, the Cleo Cuff and the Dome Cuff.

Clara Kasavina is best-known for original, collectible evening bags, clutches, purses and minaudières, many studded with Swarovski crystals or crafted of beautiful skins.

Their bags, belts and jewelry are all made in a factory in New York and are to be seen in leading fashion and lifestyle publications. Many are investment pieces such as “Peter the Great,” an ovoid-shaped entrance bag gleaming with a palette of pastel Swarovski Elements or with the gemstone tones of sapphire blue, peridot green, tourmaline (gray), amethyst, pink and ruby. Fashion arbiter Candy Pratts Price featured “Peter the Great” in Vogue’s 2011 Holiday Gift Guide.

The newest styles of Clara Kasavina bags and jewelry were on display at the Fashion Coterie trade show at the Javits Center in New York in February. Among Clara’s chic and show-stopping evenings bags is “Violeta,” as lovely and as many-splendored as a country garden can be, complete with an “insect” clasp. The flowers in this golden garden are wrought of mauve and garnet-colored Swarovski crystals with sparkling emerald-colored leaves.

Like many of their creations, inspiration derives from the legendary Fabergé eggs, the imperial jeweled eggs commissioned by the Russian Tzars. “Our heritage is Russian,” says Clara, who emigrated from St. Petersburg. “We are obsessed with Fabergé. But we draw inspiration elsewhere, too,” she says, pointing out exquisite red and gold and black and gold bags that evoke Shanghai in this Chinese Year of the Dragon.

STACY KEIBLER, THE GIRL WITH THE GOLDEN RISE by Peggy Healy

Darlings – you know that Clara Kasavina’s fabulous designer evening bags and brilliant jewelry creations routinely stride the red carpet adorning the likes of Catherine Zeta Jones, Rihanna, and Cat Deeley (to name just a few of Clara’s fans of the silver and TV screens). But are you au fait with the newest sparkler on the scene?  No no no, we don’t mean the Elizabeth Taylor Diamond just sold at Christie’s auction. We’re talking about Stacy Keibler! Her star has been rising dramatically ever since her romance with heartthrob George Clooney became public last year at the Toronto International Film Festival. And she’s the latest celebrity to cotton to Clara Kasavina’s timeless, artful evening bags (which, by the way, are divine investment items).

Here’s Stacy holding Clara’s Farrah bag, a golden rectangle studded with Swarovski Elements with a little double “stoned” tuck-in chain. The gold goes stunningly with Stacy’s golden tresses, but the bag comes in silver, too. Clara says, “Whatever your mood, dear. Silver and gold never grow old.”

CLARA KASAVINA: RED HOT SIZZLING GLAMOUR by Peggy Healy

Clara Kasavina’s fabulous, finely-wrought jewelry and timeless designer evening bags are featured in a slew of just-out glossies, from Canada’s high fashion magazine, Flare, to our bible for for the newly betrothed — Brides magazine. We believe Clara Kasavina’s bags and baubles are perfect complements to the new designer fashions that strode the catwalk during New York’s 2012 Fashion Week. What works with what, you ask?  Here’s our advice:

Clara Kasavina’s Branchie ring worn by Emily VanKamp on the cover of Flare magazine goes beautifully with these fresh classics  from Thakoon. The hand-made wraparound  filigreed ring set with Swarovski stones gives pop to Thakoon’s “old school elegance of New York.”

Clara Kasavina’s  Francis Hoop earrings, brilliant, pear-shaped double drops set with Swarovski Elements, are featured in the March issue of Brides Magazine. These sparklies flatter the face and would grace any of the gorgeous evening gowns Reem Acra showed in her new collection:

What evening bag could hold its own against this cool, golden column entrance dress from the inimitable Naeem Khan?  We propose a cool, silvery entrance bag, specifically Clara Kasavina’s Romeo, winner of InStyle’s 2011 red carpet award.  This is the collectible evening bag Candy Pratts Price picked for the pages of Vogue.com and that the editors of Focus magazine’s chose for their Spring/Summer 2012 issue.

A strapless evening gown needs a beautiful cuff. We think Clara Kasavina’s Nina Cuff seen in the March issue  of Brides magazine would look stunning worn with this Tadashi Shoji strapless gown. But if one is good, two are better — so why not wear a pair of cuffs? As Clara’s husband and design partner says, “More is more.”

Picks for Beyonce’s Blue Ivy by Peggy Healy

Suddenly, it’s a blue, blue. blue, blue world. (Well, Earth always was blue from the moon.) Just ask Beyoncé and her hubby, Jay-Z, who named their brand-new baby Blue Ivy. Or Clara Kasavina, co-creator with her husband, sculptor Misha Berger, of the eponymous line of collectible evening hand bags and designer jewelry.

Clara and Misha have infused their Spring/Summer 2012 Collection with the freshest blues of the season. “We’re in the mood for blue, Sweetheart, not a blue mood,” confided Clara Kasavina, smiling. “We love all the shades — baby blue, robin’s egg blue, aqua, sapphire. Our inspiration? We’ve taken our cues from fashion, travel, design history, Pop Art and pop culture.”  And speaking of pop culture, wasn’t that Beyoncé posing regally in Essence wearing Clara Kasavina’s cool as ice silver choker?

Thumb through the Clara Kasavina web site (I know, I know, it’s digital, but your thumb’s a digit, too) and see how many blue creations you can count.  I’ve found at least a half a dozen, but here’s one I just adore:

Swan Princess baby blue python

Clara Kasavina’s Swan Princess.  The frame of this romantic yet modern, baby blue python evening handbag is encrusted with Swarovski crystals so intricately set they conjure Kate Middleton’s Cartier tiara. The name comes from the charming clasp — a pair of opposing swans wrought of crystals. Pretty silver chain straps are also inset with Swarovski diamanté. Wear it as a dazzling entrance accessory to your next party and swan around like a princess. Or like Beyoncé. They’ll be kneeling at your feet.

CLARA KASAVINA – THE BACK STORY by Peggy Healy

I’m in love with Peter the Great. Not the Tsar who transformed Russia, but the dazzling, jaw-dropping designer evening bag created by Clara Kasavina and her sculptor husband Misha Berger, the artistic couple behind the celebrated Clara Kasavina company. This is the very same must-have minaudiere chosen by style icon Candy Pratts Price for inclusion in her recent VOGUE Holiday Gift Guide dedicated to all things lush and lavish.

“Just what inspired such a fresh, crystal-studded evening bag as Peter the Great?” I asked the irrepressible Clara Kasavina. “Darling,” she said, “we adore the imperial, Fabergé jeweled eggs commissioned by the Russian tsars. So, Misha adapted the curves of an egg into a regal ovoid shape and encrusted it with jewels. Candy called it a ‘grenade!”

Pastel Multi

Well, this red carpet accessory certainly explodes — with a panoply of colors chosen from the Pop Art palette. A plethora of Swarovski Elements are hand set in gem stone tones: sapphire blue, peridot green, tourmaline, amethyst, pink , ruby red and clear crystals. (The same Pop Art theme runs throughout the Clara Kasavina Spring/Summer 2012 Collection, a gorgeous assemblage of luxurious evenings bags, clutches, purses and jewelry.)
